The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are currently showing Android and any device on the market you can think of how it’s done. The numbers are dazzling, but perhaps the most impressive is how quickly people are embracing iOS 8, the latest version of Cupertino’s mobile platform. Apple is certainly destroying the myth that Android is becoming less fragmented, and here’s how.

It turns out that over 30% of all users running an iOS device have upgraded to the 8th version of the platform, and it has only been available for three days. Before we touch on those specific numbers for Apple, let’s focus on how they are so much better than anything Android could do.

Android 4.4 KitKat, the build that was created to start a process that will extend into Android L to unify the platform currently stands at around 25%. So, a quarter of all Android devices run the latest version… not bad, but not great either considering KitKat has been available since last November. To put that in perspective, iOS 8 surpassed KitKat’s 10 month adoption rates in just three days.

It is virtually impossible for KitKat or L to meet Apple’s adoption levels, with 90% of all iOS users able to upgrade to iOS 8 and likely to do so before the year is out. That certainly happened with iOS 7 and will happen again this time, and that’s why the App Store is still miles better than the Google Play Store; developers simply know what device they are building for and also what platform build.

As for iOS 8 vs. iOS 7, the newer version is actually down on its predecessor, which raced to 50% of all devices within three days of release. However, iOS 7 was seen as a new dawn, a massive re-tooling and overhaul of the platform, whereas iOS 8 is much more of a continuation.
