Microsoft  and Skype today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion in cash from the investor group led by Silver Lake. The agreement has been approved by the boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype.

The acquisition will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, bringing benefits to both consumers and enterprise users and generating significant new business and revenue opportunities. The combination will extend Skype’s world-class brand and the reach of its networked platform, while enhancing Microsoft’s existing portfolio of real-time communications products and services.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier tonight that Microsoft–in what would be its most aggressive acquisition in the digital space–was zeroing in on buying Skype for $8.5 billion all in with an assumption of the Luxembourg-based company’s debt. Sources told BoomTown tonight that the deal for the online telephony and video communications giant is actually done and will be announced early tomorrow morning.

Apple saw its share of the global smartphone market continue to climb in the first quarter, closing the gap on market-leader Nokia Corp., according to data from IDC. In a report Thursday, IDC said Apple ended the first quarter with 18.7% of the global smartphone market, up from 16.1% in the fourth quarter. The growth came as the company expanded its popular iPhone into new carriers such as Verizon Wireless.

Apple has overtaken Nokia as the world's largest vendor of mobile handsets by revenue, research firm Strategy Analytics said Thursday after both companies released earnings.

"We estimate Apple's wholesale revenues for its iPhone handset division stood at $11.9 billion in the first quarter of 2011," Alex Spektor, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said."Apple overtook Nokia for the first time, which recorded a lower $9.4 billion of wholesale handset revenues."

Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 second quarter ended March 26, 2011. The Company posted record second quarter revenue of $24.67 billion and record second quarter net profit of $5.99 billion, or $6.40 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $13.50 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 41.4 percent compared to 41.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 59 percent of the quarter's revenue.
