Less than 24 hours after Apple presented its iPhone 4S to the world, Samsung has revealed plans to file lawsuits in a bid to block the sale of the device on grounds of alleged patent infringement. The Korean electronics giant, which is engaged in an increasingly bitter intellectual property war with Apple over a number of products, confirmed in a blog post that it sought preliminary injunctions on Tuesday in courts in Milan and Paris.

On Tuesday, Apple sent reporters an email with the message,”Let’s talk iPhone,” inviting them to an event at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. South Korea’s telecom titan KT Corp. said Monday that it will roll out a new service for Apple Inc.’s iPhone, which will turn the smartphone into a mobile wallet for wireless financial transactions. The country’s second-largest mobile operator plans to introduce a new smartphone case for the iPhone based on near field communication (NFC) technology, which allows a wireless exchange of data within a 10 centimeter range, it said.

The volume of Android application downloads is set to overtake iPhone for the first time this year, predicted Ovum on Thursday. The analyst firm said Google’s smartphone platform will take a significant lead in 2011, with the number of downloads worldwide reaching 8.1 billion compared to Apple’s 6 billion. Ovum expects Android to dominate for the foreseeable future and forecasts that by 2016 the number of Android application downloads will be almost double those of Apple, at 21.8 billion and 11.6 billion respectively.

Samsung Electronics Co. continued to dominate the U.S. market for mobile subscribers in the three months ended in July, while Apple Inc. preserved its lead over Blackberry-maker Research in Motion Ltd., according to market researcher comScore Inc. The results of comScore’s survey of more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers come amid stiff competition among makers of mobile phones and software.
