Apple won a victory Thursday in its global patent battle with Samsung when a judge in Australia upheld a temporary injunction blocking the South Korean company from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer in the Pacific nation. Justice Annabelle Bennett ruled that the Samsung product couldn’t be sold in Australia if it used features such as touch-screen technology that Apple claims infringe patents used in its popular iPad tablet.

Annual mobile application downloads are forecast to grow by 56.6% per year to reach 98 billion worldwide in 2015, predicted Berg Insight on Friday. The research firm said the growth will continue to be driven by smartphones, which will account for 70% of all handsets sold in 2015. 62% of the 98 billion apps will be downloaded to iOS and Android devices, with Windows Phone completing the top three.

Apple invited reporters to an iPhone-related event Oct. 4, setting the stage for the widely anticipated launch of its latest smartphone. On Tuesday, Apple sent reporters an email with the message,”Let’s talk iPhone,” inviting them to an event at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.
