The Dev Team has released a new version of redsn0w that allows iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad to be downgraded to an earlier version of iOS 5 from the latest iOS 5.1.1.

Note: You will be able to downgrade only if you have SHSH blobs for your device saved locally (via TinyUmbrella for ex.)  or on Cydia servers.

iOS 5.1.1 was just released by Apple and has already been jailbroken. The jailbreak remains tethered, which means that each time you reboot your iOS device you will need to connect it to a computer and boot with the assistance of redsn0w.

This jailbreak is only for older devices on iOS 5.1.1, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th gen. iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad are not yet supported.

The easiest way to downgrade your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4^th gen., iPod Touch 3^rd gen. and iPad 1 running 5.1 firmware back to 5.0.1 is with iH8sn0w’s iFaith tool (sorry Mac owners it’s Windows only).

Only the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 and the iPod touch users can downgrade back to iOS 5.0.1 custom firmware as long as they have SHSH blobs saved for the firmware they are downgrading to. iPad 2 users can only downgrade back to iOS 4.x as long as they have saved SHSH blobs for it.

Yesterday was a great day for iPhone unlockers. Soon after the unlock method was unveiled, iPhone Dev Team released a new version of redsn0w, which now allows users who unlocked their iPhone using SAM method to make a backup of the activation key.  Having the key will be useful in the future even if Apple fixes this method.

redsn0w 0.9.10b8 adds the ability to backup arbitrary directories or files from your device into a zip file on your Mac or PC.  The new button is Extras->Even More->Backup and it requires your device to be jailbroken with the afc2 service enabled (most jailbreaks include that).  By default it will backup your activation records from /var/root/Library/Lockdown, which is useful for everyone taking advantage of today’s SAM unlock using Loktar_Sun’s trick (more on that in a later post!).

The 0.9.10b8b update to redsn0w makes the zip files more compatible with the native Windows explorer (which doesn’t like leading slashes in the filenames).

Great news unlockers! iPhone hacker called Loktar_Sun discovered and released a method for unlocking the iPhone using Sam Bingner’s SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) package.

This method was confirmed by iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd. He announced on Twitter that he successfully unlocked his iPhone 4S.

Sam Bigner confirmed that the unlock method using SAM also works for iPhone 4. We can expect new version of SAM that will make this process easier.

Note: This method will work only for one SIM, if you want to use multiple SIM cards you must perform the unlock with each SIM individually.

What do you need: A jailbroken iPhone that can be activated in iTunes (that is, not officially blacklisted), a computer with the latest iTunes installed and working internet connection. You will also need to know the carrier that your iPhone is locked to.

1. Install Sam Bingner’s SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) package. I recommend that you get it from repo.bingner.com since older versions have a different interface and may not work for this purpose.
2. Enter SAM by either going through the settings menu or find the SAMPrefs icon on your springboard. You will need to have the SIM card you intend to use in your phone.
3. Go to utilities and select “De-Activate iPhone”, your ActivationState under “More Information” should now be “Unactivated”
4. With SAM enabled, choose “By Country and Carrier” in “Method”; find your carrier, for some carriers operating more than one Carrier ID you may need to select “SIM ID”; easy to tell since iTunes will not activate if the wrong IMSI is selected.
5. Go to More Information”, copy or write down the IMSI in “SAM Details”, then tap “Spoof Real SIM to SAM”.
6. Go back to the main SAM screen and change your “Method” to manual. Paste or enter the IMSI string we saved in Step 5.
7. Connect your iPhone to your computer and allow iTunes to do its job (namely re-activating your phone), double click “Phone Number” parameter at the main device screen and make sure that the ICCID matches that of your SIM card. If not you need to start over from Step 1.

This video will show you how to use Sn0wbreeze to downgrade, jailbreak and hacktivate all at one. It is important to have your SHSH blobs on file for the iOS version you want to downgrade to.

Thanks to our very own “Professor for putting together this guide for jailbreaking your iPhone 4s using the Windows OS.  We’ve also included a video.

Please follow these instructions at your own risk.

1) Download CLI tool for windows to your downloads folder - (Files attached to this post), then extract the folder to your download folder.

2) There should now be a folder called: “cinject_0.4.3″

3) Connect your iDevice to your PC with a USB data cable.

4) Open up CMD, right click and run as administrator and type (Without ” quotes) “cd downloads”

5) Then type: cd cinject_0.4.3

6) Next type this command  cinject.exe -i payloads/jailbreak.mobileconfig

7) On your device, click on install, and when prompted to type in a password, just click next, with no password in.

8.) Now back to the PC and type this command: cinject.exe -j payloads

9) Just wait, might take some time.

10) Now type this command:  cinject.exe -w

11) On your device toggle the “VPN” switch on in the settings, after a few seconds it should say “error”, this is ok

12) Now reboot your iDevice. Cydia should be installed.

If you do not have Cydia installed, you will need to repeat all steps from step 4.

How to Jailbreak the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 with Absinthe

Step 1: Download, extract, and run Absinthe from here.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 via USB.

Step 3: Click “Jailbreak” to run the Absinthe jailbreak. It will take a while on the beginning portion, and eventually your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 will look like it’s restoring a backup. It will say “Restoring in Progress”. This can be pretty lengthy. Don’t worry, it’s working. Don’t touch your device until completely finished!

Step 4: Once completed, unlock your iPhone if necessary, and you should see an Absinthe icon on the Home screen. You may have to search for it if you have a lot of app icons. Tap the Absinthe icon, and it should load the GreenPois0n site, and will then reboot your device. Once it loads back up, the Cydia icon will have replaced the Absinthe icon.

Step 5: Your iPhone 4S or iPad 2  is now  jailbroken! It took a while, but it was certainly worth the wait. Now all that’s left to do is load Cydia for the first time, and start downloading your favorite jailbreak apps and tweaks.

Some users are experiencing errors with a message saying “Error establishing Database Connection”.  Here’s what you do:

iOS hacker PlanetBeing who helped develop the jailbreak tweeted a simple fix for the “error establishing a database connection”. Apparently, all you need to do is go to Settings > Network > VPN > ON.

The VPN connection will most likely give an error and your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 should reboot shortly after. Once it’s rebooted, try launching the Absinthe webclip again.

That should do the trick.
