You know what piggies are, no doubt.  Woogies are wolves, which makes sense only if you want to name your game Piggy Woogy, and that sounds cute to you.  Thankfully, there’s more to this game than the name suggests.  It’s a matching game with a significant dose of action/strategy tossed in, and the combination makes for a serious challenge.

Your first look at Piggy Woogy is going to result in thinking “I didn’t need another game where I put three pretty gems in a row for points,” and you’re probably right about that. But that’s not what this game is.  You’re not playing for points here, you’re playing for Woogies, or against Woogies, really.  Instead of just figuring out the necessary pattern to rack up as many jewel matches and combos as you possibly can within a certain time frame, you have to capture wolves.  They’re interested in having pork chops for dinner, and those chops happen to be attached to your friends Piggy and Pinny, defending their jewel-walled tower from hungry Woogies.

To make the matches, you swipe the pair of gems you want to switch, which sets off the predictable match, drop, and jewel rearrangement you’re familiar with from other such games.  The key to Piggy Woogy, however, is making the matches in such a way that they dislodge the climbing Woogies.  Otherwise, those Woogies will take a bite out of your piggies’ health meter, and you lose. Not only that, but you’ve got a quota of woogies to catch for each stage, starting with five and multiplying into the dozens quickly.

Despite looking more like a matching game than anything else, Piggy Woogy is more action/strategy in practice.  The Woogies don’t let up, and they evolve to include all types of dastardly, more difficult to capture Woogy-fiends as you go.  There’s a variety of enemies, and some bonus attacks (like oil, ice, and refresh), as well as special blocks which drop within the jewel wall to keep it interesting.  Piggy Woogy is enough of a departure from typical matching games to offer the most accomplished player of those games a serious challenge.  That’s where its target fan base is, I would guess—people who love matching games but are bored with the fact that all they can really do is force you to go faster.  Piggy Woogy puts more brain cells to work.

It looks good doing it, too.  Piggy Woogy has put enough effort into its fairytale franchise design that I wouldn’t be surprised to see plenty of Piggy Woogy spinoff products—other games, videos, etc.  It’s a pleasant fairytale premise with a decent soundtrack and great character design that could do more than promote a matching game.

Piggy Woogy is available now in the App Store, for the reasonable investment of $1.99 (iTunes Link).  Don’t blame me when you find out it’s not a no brainer.  This game is sometimes as frustrating as it is addictive, in a very satisfying way.

I thought I’d seen just about enough castle defense games on iOS to last me the rest of my life.  There’s a trend for dumbing games down so much to appeal to the casual audience that’s been way overused in my opinion.  Fantasy Defense doesn’t do that; in fact, with added RPG elements and fast-paced action, it should appeal to gamers who want something a tad more substantial.  But it also has lots of potential to suck in the casual player, too.

Fantasy Defense gives you a standard goal and then dresses it up with plenty of features. Keep monsters from smashing the gate to your fortress—but do it by planning strategies, thinking on your feet, and managing your gold, mana, and hero points effectively.  Some nice customization features make learning as you go possible for those who aren’t familiar with all of these bells and whistles, while letting you blaze ahead if you don’t need the practice.  Your fighting force is human, and you’re defending your own fortress (and the world) from the army of the Wraith King.  The Wraith King’s minions are a motley lot of monsters, zombies, vampires, and mythological baddies, each with their own characteristics that you’ll do well to learn.

Placing your forces is a drag-and-drop event. You need to use mages, archers, and warriors effectively, considering their attack power and range, in order to keep your gate in one piece.  Waves of enemies will pour out of the Wraith King’s gate along increasingly complex paths that increase your challenge.  As you kill enemies, you’ll gain gold, which you use to place more fighters.  Be thrifty, or the game will get a lot faster paced than you can handle.

Really, this game has a lot going for it that should attract a lot of fans.  The devs are obviously veterans of designing these types of games, judging from how well-executed the upgrades, currency, and combat systems are.  Twelve different units of fighters and three hero types give your defense variety. I haven’t gotten around to counting the types of bad guys—there’s a truckload.  Three modes of gameplay give this great replay value, and break it up some if it becomes monotonous.  Changing the speeds of play is another very nice feature that allows users to tailor Fantasy Defense to their own levels of proficiency.

Graphics are not innovative in this game, but they’re pleasantly nostalgic.  The only real issue I had with the look of the game is that it’s a bit cramped when the screen is overflowing with fighters and enemies. Since you can (and will want to) direct your fighters to prioritize from time to time, sorting out who you’re tapping on is necessary.  This is more of a symptom of screen size than anything else, and Fantasy Defense does a good job of keeping on screen menus out of the way, so the bother is minimal.

It’s a great big li’l time waster, and it sells for only $2.99 in the App Store.  It’s definitely worth trying out.

SMS+ is the best solution to improve your SMS experience on iOS. It integrates perfectly in the native SMS application, adding to it those functionalities you won’t ever be able to stay without after having tried them. SMS+ allows you to quickly reply to an incoming sms without leaving the app you’re using, or even bring up (via an Activator gesture) a new window where you can compose a new message, choosing the address from your contacts. It also includes a “Later” feature, which you can use to keep a message unread to read it later (an icon in the Status Bar will remember you that it’s there).
