Redesigned jelly rolls to improve battery life on the iPhone and iPad

Apple is working on a concept for a new battery using multiple “jelly rolls” in a single pouch, described in the filing “Battery with Multiple Jelly Rolls in a Single Pouch” to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The application was filed on 26 January 2010 by Apple and credited to Ramesh C. Bhardwaj, Taisup Hwang, and Richard M. Mank.
Jelly rolls are also known as Swiss rolls and is used regular cylindrical rechargeable batteries, i.e. AA, AAA, C etc. Apple points out that lithium-polymer batteries common today is convenient as they utilise flexible pouches with one roll in each that can be tailor made for a device and achieve an efficiency of up to 95%.
Combining multiple jelly rolls in a single pouch will improve efficiency even more, and the rolls could even be of different sizes to maximize the utilized space in a device. With this new technique the battery could be placed around other components wherever there is free space and give those extra mAh we all wants. Another advantage is that the voltage can be better optimized for the device and its components, also improving efficiency.
Still it might take years before we’ll actually see this invention in our new iDevices, so don’t hold your breath – the upcoming iPhone 5 will most likely not utilise such a battery.
