Apple is expected to maintain its dominance of the tablet market for the next five years, though will cede some market share to Google Inc.’s Android operating system during that period, according to a forecast by Gartner on Monday.
The market research firm predicted Apple’s iOS platform will represent 69% of the tablet market this year and slip to 47% by 2015. Android, the mobile operating system developed by Google, is expected to have about 39% of the market by 2015, up from an expected 14.2% this year, the report predicted.
“Smartphone users will want to buy a tablet that runs the same operating system as their smartphone. This is so that they can share applications across devices as well as for the sense of familiarity the user interfaces will bring,” Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi wrote in the report.
